Germany and UNESCO

Long before the Federal Republic of Germany was admitted as a member of the United Nations in 1973, UNESCO opened the door to Germany’s return to international politics at the multilateral level. The Federal Republic of Germany’s admission to UNESCO on 11 July 1951 ended the spiritual isolation into which Germany had fallen since 1933. For Germany, this provided the opportunity to take part in international dialogue, placing its particular historical responsibility in the service of a durable peace.
