Arts, Culture and Sustainable Development Strategies
German Commission for UNESCO
The panel discussion addresses the potential for development through cultural heritage and the creative and cultural economy. The debate on culture in the UN post-2015 agenda for sustainable development will be illustrated by examples from the three UNESCO conventions of 1972, 2003 and 2005 – the contribution of Arts and Culture to sustainable development is their transversally connecting element. In industrialised and developing countries alike, artistic talent, cultural expressions, capability and potential can be found in people of all ages. Creativity and heritage promote the development of civil society and foster interaction. This is an important opportunity as the internationally shared framework, the post-2015 Sustainable Development Goals, is currently in the making - all countries will revisit their sustainable development strategies from 2016 onwards.
