#Unite4Heritage: A Social Media Campaign by UNESCO

On 28 March 2015 UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova launched the campaign #Unite4Heritage at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Baghdad in Iraq. #Unite4Heritage is a social media campaign to counter the propaganda of cultural cleansing and the destruction of cultural heritage, to support Iraqi youth and to mobilise young people across the world for its protection.

“Today, we send a clear message,” said the Director-General. “We do not accept cultural cleansing and we will stand together to do everything we can to stop it.”

The campaign #Unite4heritage invites everyone, especially young people from the Arab region: “Take a photo of your favorite heritage site or artifact and tell us why it’s important for you. Post it to Facebook, Twitter or Instragram using the #Unite4Heritage hashtag.”

The launch has taken place in the presence of students, government ministers and university officials. During her visit to Baghdad, the Director-General Irina Bokova met with the Prime Minister of Iraq, Haider Al Abadi and the Speaker of the House of Representative, Salim al-Jabouri along with several other high level officials.
