WHC Session Day #2: Unite4Heritage

On the second day of its session the World Heritage Committee adopted the Bonn Declaration on World Heritage. The Committee laments the destruction and looting of World Heritage sites as a military strategy. It recommends the United Nations Security Council to include the protection of cultural heritage in UN Peacekeeping operations.

As a consequence and with World Heritage sites under attack all around the world, UNESCO Director-General Irina Bokova launched the global coalition for the protection of cultural heritage under the hashtag #Unite4Heritage. The coalition aims to strengthen the bonds to various partners in order to protect heritage sites more effectively—including security forces, Interpol and the World Customs Organization as well as museums and art trade.

in the evening the Chairpersons of the Committees of UNESCO Culture Conventions met in the plenary hall of the former Bundestag at the Rhine. In a joint statement they appealed to consider the links between culture, sustainable development and peace for the successful implementation of United Nation’s Post-2015 Agenda.

They encouraged the UN to recognise the protection and understanding of cultural and natural heritage, cultural diversity and creative expressions as a cross-cutting issue for the implemention of the Post-2015 goals.
